Water-staining at foot of many leaves Provenance: armorial Chippendale crest and coronet bookplate (Franks 17072): 'Earl of Ancram' [probably William Henry Kerr, 4th Marquess of Lothian (1710-1775), styled Earl of Ancram 1735-1767]. Manuscript Newbattle Abbey shelfmarks on front fly-leaf: "N. 15" (crossed-out) and "F.1.21 & 22". Originally this book was in the library at Newbattle Abbey, the principal Scottish seat of the marquesses of Lothian, and presumably was brought to Blickling after 1850 when the Lothian's came into their ownership of Blickling through marriage. Binding: eighteenth-century full sprinkled calf (rubbed and scratched); sewn onto seven sewing supports; gilt roll pattern along board edges; gold-tooled spine, with fillet, roll and stamp decoration; gilt title on brown leather label and gilt vol. number on dark-stained panel on spine; red painted textblock edges.
