WW. 1785" [written by William Windham III (1750-1810), who was a close friend of Johnson and who bought a number of Johnson's books at the sale of his library in 1785]. Ink inscription in eighteenth-century hand on loose front fly-leaf: "Mr Verdier's servant is ready to attest, upon oath that the Volume which wounded the Head of Robert Norris M.D., was Gruterus's Lampas Critica, and that which broke Mr. Lintot's shin was Scaliger's Poetices". Manuscript price[?] in pencil on loose front fly-leaf: "6s[?]-10-12". Old Felbrigg shelfmarks in pencil: Y2, Z2 (crossed-out). Binding: seventeenth-century plain vellum over boards (very discoloured); sewn on three supports; remnants and manuscript title and paper label on spine.
