Bibliographic description
XII, 118; 152 p., [1] leaf of plates : ill. ; 4to. Former shelfmark: 45.f.17. Running number: 7856. Water-staining on foot of leaves throughout. Another copy of the "Histoire additions at corrections" from part 2 pp. 132-138 has been cut up and the slips tipped onto the respective pages. Provenance: manuscript initial on eighteenth-century fly-leaf: "M." [i.e. catalogue code of John Mitchell (ca. 1685-1751), librarian to Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742)]. Autograph letter from the author Prosper Marchand at The Hague, dated 17th April 1740, to Sir Richard Ellys tipped onto eighteenth-century fly-leaf. In the letter Marchand explains that he gave the book to "Monsieur Trevor" to send to Ellys, and that this is one of only seven or eight copies in which the author has personally pasted in the printed slips containing additional notes and corrections. The diplomat Robert Trevor (1706-1783), cousin of Ellys and later 1st Viscount Hampden, acted as Ellys's agent at book auctions and as his go-between whilst he was resident in The Hague. Manuscript inscription on verso of eighteenth-century fly-leaf facing half-title: "Marchand (Prosp.)" [i.e. author note and catalogue entry for anonymous works, written by John Mitchell]. Manuscript nineteenth-century former shelfmark on front pastedown: 4.D.14. Binding: nineteenth-century full calf; triple gilt fillet border; gilt roll pattern on board edges; gilt title and place/date of publication on green goatskin labels on spine; red sprinkled edges; nineteenth-century nonpareil pattern marbled endpapers and blank fly-leaves. Water-staining on both boards.
