Provenance: Bookplate: Thomas Carlyle; also, in pencil ms on front free endpaper: "J.A.Carlyle 1845"; below this, in ms ink: "Thomas Carlyle 1849". Binding: 18th cent. sprinkled calf; blind tooled fillets; spine blind-tooled, with five raised bands; red leather (?19th-cent.) spine label, lettered gilt; edges sprinkled red. Both boards detached.
