Bibliographic description
ix, [1], 277, [1]p., plates;. 4to. Accession no. 3212. Former shelfmarks in ink on paper labels: Y61; F.3.41. Catalogued from Barber catalogue. Provenance: Bequest of James de Rothschild, 1957. Provenance: cutting from an unidentified English sale catalogue; 1897 Waddesdon catalogue, p. 47. Binding: seventeenth-century French red morocco, elaborately gilt; red and green headbands; gilt edges; printed waste under pastedowns. Blind oval in centre of each side, surrounded by a deep lozenge built up of small tools with similar corner infills, this in turn surrounded by a rectangular frame of three pallet borders separated by two double fillets. The border round the sides is of three other pallet borders, again separated by double fillets; the flat spine is treated as a single panel surrounded by a roll: groups of small tools alternate with four impressions of a small fleur-de-lis. The lettering-piece appears to be an eighteenth-century addition
