Summary
Bibliographic description
[12], 370, [14] p. ; 8vo. Running number: 5255. Provenance: manuscript initial on front fly-leaf: "M." [i.e. catalogue code of John Mitchell (ca. 1685-1751), librarian to Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742)]. Defaced early Jacobean armorial bookplate (Franks 24853): arms ermine five lozenges in bend [lozengy] in honour point the hand of Ulster; crest a cross crosslet fitchy between two wings expanded; helmet of a baronet; text defaced 'Sr Robert Pye of Clifton Campville Staffordshire Bart.' [i.e. Sir Robert Pye (1696-1734), succeeded 1724 as 4th Baronet. His great uncle Robert Pye (ca. 1620-1701) married Anne, daughter of John Hampden, and thus the Pye family were distantly related to Sir Richard Ellys, which perhaps explains the book's presence in Ellys's library]. Binding: eighteenth-century sprinkled calf; gilt roll pattern on board edges; gold-tooled spine, with gilt title label. Red sprinkled edges.
