Stukeley was an antiquary, natural philosopher and practising physician in Boston and Grantham, a member of the Spalding Gentlemen's Society, and a close friend of Sir Richard Ellys. Ellys himself suffered from gout and it is probable that Stukeley attended him in a professional capacity]. Manuscript initial on front free endpaper: "M." [i.e. catalogue code of John Mitchell (ca. 1685-1751), librarian to Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742)]. Nineteenth-century former shelfmark in pencil on front free endpaper, erased: "19[or 17]:G:33". Binding: eighteenth-century full sprinkled calf; double blind fillet border; blind roll pattern on boards; gold-tooled spine. Red sprinkled edges.
