Summary
Bibliographic description
44 leaves;. 8vo. Accession no. 5454. Catalogued from Barber catalogue. Provenance: Bequest of James de Rothschild, 1957. Provenance: possibly Julie-Lucine d'Angennes, later duchesse de Montausier (1607-1671), or, perhaps more likely, Charles de Sainte-Maure, duc de Montausier (1610-1690), Julie's husband, who bequeathed both this and the 4to. manuscripts to their daughter Marie-Julie, duchesse d'Uzès (d.1696). They appear to have been sold after Marie-Julie's death to Moreau, premier valet to the duc de Bourgogne, who re-sold to François-Roger de Gaignières before 1699. Gaignières bequeathed his manuscripts to the king, but not all reached the Royal Library. The Guirlande next appears at the sale of the chevalier de Bauche (sale 1726, lot 785) when bought by the abbé de Rothelin; in 1765 they were in the possession of Cotte, then to Louis-Jean Gaignat who also had the 4to version. Sold in 1769 to the duc de La Vallière. After this the two manuscripts are separated for the first time. For the Waddesdon 8vo manuscript: duc de La Vallière, sold 1783, Incourt d'Hangard (sale 1789) Le Fevre (sale 1797), B. Debure who collation notes and his signature, also "cabinet de ma mère"; sold 1853 to Marquis de Sainte-Maure Montausier (inscription "acheté le 21 decembre ..."); book-label on flyleaf verso of Comte de Mosbourg, sale 1893; 1897 Waddesdon catalogue, p.32. Binding: French red morocco, bound in 1641, covers outlined of a single, then double fillet and, within rows of the JL cipher of Julie Lucine d'Angennes, recipient of the presentation copy, repeated in offset lines, alternately eight and seven to a row, to make 20 lines in all. Spine not lettered, but the cipher is repeated twice in each of the penels. Headbands have faded, but originally red, white and blue; gilt edges; board edges decorated with a small dot and chevron roll. Red morocco doublures repeat the cover design but have a small tool at the intersections of the panels as well. Some time before 1783 N.-D. Derome made a slipcase of green moroccolined with blue watered slk, lettered La/Guirlande/de/Julie in the second panel of the spine. The binding was attributed to a binder called Le Gascon by F.-R. de Gaignières in the 1690s.
