[8],173,[1]p.,plates. 8vo. Accession no. 3739. Catalogued from Barber catalogue. The 17 original pen and wash drawings by Hayman are inlaid and inserted. In addition, there are two earlier states of all the engravings except the frontispiece and fables IX, XIV and XVI (one only of each), VI, VII and XIII (none), and XV (3). Provenance: Bequest of James de Rothschild, 1957. Provenance: the book and original drawings belonged to Dr Charles Chauncey (1707-1777) who had them bound by Johnson in white calf; he bequeathed his books to his brother Nathaniel (sale 1790, lot 3063); Thomas Allen (sale 1795, lot 947); John Strange (sale 1801, lot 2259); George Baker who inserted the proof states of the engravings loose in the old binding (sale 1825, lot 582); Thomas Thorpe bookseller, for William Beckford; Alexander, tenth duke of Hamilton, sold by the twelfth duke (Sotheby's December 1882, pt. 2, lot 2602); B. Quaritch. A flyleaf from the original binding has notes of the book's history to 1821. Binding: straight-grained English citron morocco with interlaced lozenge and rectangle on covers. Spine gilt with broad bands and lettered directly, the place and date being given at the foot. Dark green headbands, gilt edges, leather inner hinges and leather-framed dark green pastedown. Dark green facing flyleaf. In the style and colour of leather favoured by Charles Lewis and probably bound by him in the late 1820s.
