Provenance: Library of Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742) of Nocton, Lincolnshire. Acquired by Ellys at the Uilenbroek sale, Amsterdam, in 1729 (lot 1126) for "15.5." (presumably Dutch gulden and stuivers). Binding: seventeenth-century Dutch red morocco gold-tooled binding with Dutch ‘drawer handle’ centrepiece, typical of bindings in the library of Amsterdam merchant, Goswin Uilenbroek, 1658-1714. Gilt roll patterned frame, gilt roll patterned central panel with fleuron cornerpieces, gilt arabesque 'drawer handle' centrepiece; gilt geometric pattern along board edges; five raised bands, gilt-tooled spine and gilt title tooled directly on to spine; marbled paper pastedown and made endleaves; blue, yellow, and orange mottled leaf edges.
