Provenance: library of Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742) of Nocton, Lincolnshire. Note in Mitchell's catalogue "fine paper, whereof only 12 copies were printed." Manuscript inscription on front fly-leaf of vol. 1: "M. 9. vol." [i.e. catalogue code of John Mitchell (ca. 1685-1751), librarian to Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742)]; and former shelfmark inscribed on front pastedown of vol. 1: "17.G.14". Inscription on p. 106 of vol. 2 "Norfolk" in nineteenth-century hand in margin near list of works by Sir Thomas Browne. Pp. 128-9 of vol.4 marked with piece of scrap paper. Binding: eighteenth-century dense sprinkled calf with double gilt fillets to form border of intersecting lines and gilt cornerpieces. Gilt pattern on board edges. Four raised bands; gold-tooled spine with gilt title on light brown label. Brown and cream silk endbands with front beads. Sewn on four supports, laced-in. Pastedown and endleaves at both ends. Red sprinkled edges.
