Provenance: Seventeenth-century manuscript inscription on p.18: "This booke and this doctring [sic] was questioned in the parliament 1675 . Sr. John Coventrie brought this very booke into the house and gave it to me G. Hungerford". Loosely inserted: typed note by Norris, transcribing inscription, with his added note in pencil: "Probably Sir George Hungerford of Studeley, West Colne, Wilts". [i.e. Sir George Hungerford (d. 1712), of Studley, West Calne or Colne]. Eighteenth-century crest bookplate, lettered Lord Lilford, with baron's coronet. (Franks 23998 or 23999) [i.e. probably Thomas Powys, 1st Baron Lilford (1743-1800), of Lilford, Northamptonshire] Nineteenth-century book label: Lilford Library (Franks 24000) [Lilford, Northamptonshire, seat of the Powys family, Barons of Lilford]. Bequeathed to the National Trust by Norman Norris (1917-1991). Inscribed on pastedown in Norris's hand: "Lilford Library. S. [i.e. Sotheby's] 13/6 49 Lot 56 Đ5-10. Sir George Hungerford's copy with Hungerford monogram on the contemporary binding. . Binding repaired NESN.". Binding: Seventeenth-century full dark calf; gilt fillets and gilt armorial stamp with monogram G.R.H. [i.e. Hungerford]; spine gilt; rebacked preserving most of original spine; later red morocco spine label; sewn on five raised bands.
