Summary
A wall painting by Vincenzo Valdre (1740-1814) located on the north wall of the Dining Room in Calke Abbey. The painting is contained within a plaster frame and is painted in oil. This painting depicts Greek and Roman references. The painting depicts Dionysus, the Greek god of fertility and the grape-harvest. Dionysus is shown wearing a brown cloak and his lower body is wrapped with vine leaves and he is carrying a thyrsus (a wand tipped with a pine cone, a symbol of fertility). To Dionysus's left is a Maenad, who is a female follower of the god. The Maenad has her left arm holding Dionysus's cloak and Dionysus's right arm is holding her left arm. To Dionysus's right there is a putto (a cherub) who is wearing a grey sash and is holding a thyrsus. All the figures are depicted sitting on a grassy bank.
