Summary
A wall painting by Vincenzo Valdre (1740-1814) located on the west wall of the Dining Room in Calke Abbey. The painting is contained within a plaster frame and is painted in oil. This painting depicts Greek and Roman references. The painting depicts Dionysus, the Greek god of fertility and the grape-harvest. Dionysus is shown wearing a red cloak and he is playing a syrinx (Pipes of Pan, Pan was the Greek god of shepherds and flocks) . To Dionysus's right is a Maenad, who is a female follower of the god. The Maenad has her right arm around Dionysus's shoulder and her left arm around a putto (a cherub) who is wearing a red sash and is holding an urn.
