Summary
A wall painting by Vincenzo Valdre (1740-1814) located on the west wall of the Dining Room in Calke Abbey. The painting is contained within a plaster frame and is painted in oil. This painting depicts Greek and Roman references. The painting depicts Dionysus, the Greek god of fertility and the grape-harvest. Dionysus is shown wearing a crown of vine leaves and his body is adorned with vine leaves. Dionysus is supported by two Maenads. who are female followers of the god. One of the Maenads is holding a thyrsus (a wand tipped with a pine cone, a symbol of fertility) and the other female figure is holding a gold chalice.
