Summary
A wall painting by Vincenzo Valdre (1740-1814) located on the east wall of the Dining Room in Calke Abbey. The painting is contained within a plaster frame and is painted in oil. This painting depicts Greek and Roman references. The painting depicts a statue of Dionysus, the Greek god of fertility and the grape-harvest, being carried in his triumphal car. The car is being pulled by three Maenads, who are the female followers of Dionysus and a child. To the right of the car is a figure draped in grey. There are three other Maenads, one of which is carrying a basket on her head and another is playing two pipes and there is a putto (a cherub) beside this Maenad.
