Summary
A wall painting by Vincenzo Valdre (1740-1814) located on the east wall of the Dining Room in Calke Abbey. The painting is contained within a circular plaster frame and is painted in oil. This painting depicts Greek and Roman references. The painting depicts Hermes the messenger of the Greek gods, bringing Dionysus, the Greek god of fertility and the grape-harvest, as a baby to the adoring nymphs on Mount Nysa. The nymphs are Hyades who raised the infant god Dionysus. The panel has a pink, green and red coloured border.
