Summary
A wall painting by Vincenzo Valdre (1740-1814) located on the south wall of the Dining Room in Calke Abbey. The painting is contained within a plaster frame and is painted in oil. The painting depicts Greek and Roman references. The painting depicts a Maenad, a female follower of Dionysus the Greek god of fertility and the grape-harvest. The Maenad is wearing a white, blue and cream dress with a blue sash and she is playing cymbals having a cymbal in each hand. The Maenad has bells around her right ankle and around both wrists. To the right of the Maenad is a putto (a cherub) wearing a red cloak and playing two pipes.
