Summary
This is one of a series of six grisailles panels (a grisaille is a painting in shades of grey and is used to imitate sculpture) painted by Vincenzo Valdre (1740-1814). This painting depicts Greek and Roman references. The grisaille has a pink background and is located on the west wall of the Dining Room in Calke Abbey. This panel has three putti (cherubs). The putto (a cherub) on the left of the panel is winged, has a sash and is playing a trumpet and is sitting on a rock. The putto in the middle of the panel is standing on one leg and is turned towards the putto to his left. The putto on the far right of the panel has a sash and is holding a thyrsus (a wand with a pine cone tip representing fertility) and is also standing on one leg.
