Summary
This is one of a series of six grisailles panels (a grisaille is a painting in shades of grey and is used to imitate sculpture) painted by Vincenzo Valdre (1740-1814). This painting depicts Greek and Roman references. The grisaille has a pink background and is located on the north wall of the Dining Room in Calke Abbey. This panel has four putti (cherubs). Looking at the panel from the left there is a putto (a cherub) carrying a tambourine. The next putto on the right is carrying a dish. The third putto is riding a horned goat or sheep and the putto on the far right of the panel is carrying an urn in his right hand, a chalice in his left hand and he is wearing a sash.
