Summary
This is one of a series of six grisailles panels (a grisaille is a painting in shades of grey and is used to imitate sculpture) painted by Vincenzo Valdre (1740-1814). This painting depicts Greek and Roman references. The grisaille has a pink background and is located on the north wall of the Dining Room in Calke Abbey. This panel has three putti (cherubs) with sashes. The two putti (cherubs) on the left of the panel are standing together and the putto (a cherub) on the right of the panel is holding the severed head of Pan (Pan was the Greek god of shepherds and flocks) and this putto has wings.
