Summary
A series of six grisailles panels (a grisaille is a painting in shades of grey and is used to imitate sculpture) located on the walls of the Dining Room in Calke Abbey. The grisailles were painted by Vincenzo Valdre (1740-1814). This painting depicts Greek and Roman references. The grisailles have a pink background and these small panels are painted with putti (cherubs) and the panels continue the theme of fertility. Some putti are carrying a thyrsus or musical instrument and some are dancing or acting. In total they make a very decorative addition to the main panels in the Dining Room.
