Summary
A wall painting by Vincenzo Valdre (1740-1814) located on the north wall of the Dining Room in Calke Abbey. The painting is contained within a plaster frame and is painted in oil. This painting depicts Greek and Roman references. The painting depicts Dionysus, the Greek god of fertility and the grape-harvest. Dionysus is shown wearing a blue cloak and a red sarong style garment and Dionysus is holding a sacrificed mythical bird. To Dionysus's left there is a Maenad, a female follower of the god and she is holding an urn and she is dressed in a blue and red garment. There is an urn on the floor to the left of the figures and both figures are depicted on a cloud.
