A late 18th century gentleman's coat. Made from striped purple velvet cloth, cream silk edging and lining. High stand-up collar, long sleeves with fairly narrow turned-back cuffs. Close fitting to the wiast with a flared skirt, pleated at the back with a vent. Three notes attached, '18th Cent. coat worn by Sir Henry Harpur. Sent by Sir V. Harpur Crewe'. 'This coat is also a valuable one, and would be better kept separate from the others for fear of moth. All are curious and worth taking care of, I have put in some bitten apple which is said to be the best preventative of moth.' 'The bitten apple is poisonous I believe pepper and camphor are also good'.
