Summary
A George II silver-gilt baluster shaped cup and cover, applied with oval medallions beneath husk swags and with applied acanthus leaf decoration. Stiff leaf decoration around the base, supported on a reeded spreading foot with applied husk swags. Reeded S-shape handles. The cover, surmounted by a winged figure of Victory, is similarly reeded with a applied husk swags Engraved on the rim of the cover with the inscription; 'The Richmond Cup, 1775, Thos Yorke and Henry Maire Esqs, Stewards.' WT (William Tuite?), London. 1775.
Provenance
Transferred to the National Trust by the Treasury in lieu of CTT in 1985 with an endowment provided by the NHMF. The cup had been kept at the National Racing Museum in Newmarket where it had been on loan from the Harpur Crewe family. It was returned to Calke Abbey on 26.3.1999.
