Summary
A collection of glass plate and other negatives. All used by Richard Harpur Crewe. Some in their original boxes and packing, some have not been exposed. The exposed plates seem to be a collection of places he visited. a) Pinewood box with wire-hinged lid. 22 glass plates - many sea bird subjects; b) 14 plates in postage box, stamped and addressed to 'Editor of Amateur Photographer 1 Creed Lane/London.' and'R.F.H. Crewe.' written to one side. Brown paper wrapping inside is inscribed '12 group/ 3 village /Crewe'; c) 8 glass plates, one edged with tape, in lid of red box 'Special Rapid'; d) 17 glass plates, in cigar box, a loose card inside lid inscribed 'Photographs by Miss Winifred Harpur Crewe/Calke Abbey/ Derby' Stamped with postmark, 'Ross 8pm Au.13 '96'; e) 2 glass plates and one print of a horse; f) 10 glass plates in lower part of red card box, one with paper edging. One broken; g) 9 glass plates, wrapped in two packs in white paper and an envelope marked 'Plate/Mr Crewe' and addressed 'R. Crewe Esq./ Royal Victoria Hotel'; h) 4 glass plates in an envelope marked 'J.R. Crewe Esq.'; i) Box of negatives and prints; 1 roll of negative, 1 blue album of negatives, 1 brown wallet of negatives, 6 Kodak cases of negatives, 9 envelopes of negatives, 1 white envelope with 1 negative, 1 envelope of prints, c. 8 large prints and some smaller ones. (2 index cards have been used both have the same index card number) This photograph shows a Kodak instruction sheet and price list.
Provenance
Transferred to the National Trust by the Treasury in lieu of CTT in 1985 with an endowment provided by the NHMF.
