Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Card Players after Theodoor Rombouts (Antwerp 1579 – Antwerp 1637). A group of four men around a table playing cards. Three sit on the far side of the table, one approached by an old woman, a carafe of wine in front of him. On the near side of the table sits a man wearing a large brimmed plumed hat, a silk shirt and a sword around him. This painting is a 19th century copy after an engraving of the orginal panting by Rombouts in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp.
Provenance
Acquired with Calke Abbey's contents, with the aid of a grant provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government and transferred in lieu of tax on the estate of Charles Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1917 - 1981) to the National Trust with the house that was given by Henry Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1921- 1991), in 1984
