Oil painting on panel, Sir John Gardner Wilkinson (1797 - 1875), aged 46 by Henry Wyndham Phillips (London 1820 - Hollowcombe 1868), inscribed top right corner: Sr Gordon Wilkinson Kt. / Æts. 46. 1844, and inscribed on the reverse,'Calke Abbey, April 14th 1869. A portrait of Sir John Gardner Wilkinson in Turkish dress and seated cross-legged on a pink rug. Desert background setting. . This picture of Sir John Gardner Wilkinson was presented by the late Henry Wyndham Phillips, the 'Spanish' Phillips in 1844, before Sir John left England for Syria, was purchased by me at the sale of Mr Phillips pictures in April 1869. It is my desire that it shall always remain an heirloom in my family and never to be parted with on any account Georgiana Crewe'.

Provenance

Acquired at Christie’s, on 8th April 1869, at the sale of the artist’s pictures, by Lady Georgiana Stanhope Lovell, Lady Harpur Crewe (1824-1910) the wife of Sir John Harpur Crewe, 9th Bt (1824-1886). Lady Georgiana was the cousin of Sir John Gardner Wilkinson - “Calke Abbey, April 14th 1869. This picture of Sir John Gardner Wilkinson was presented by the late Henry Wyndham Phillips, the ‘Spanish’ Phillips in 1844, before Sir John left England for Syria, was purchased by me at the sale of Mr Phillips pictures in April 1869. It is my desire that it shall always remain an heirloom in my family and never to be parted with on any acccount. Georgiana Crewe.” and thence by descent until Calke Abbey was given to the National Trust by Henry Harpur Crewe (1921-1991) and the contents, including this painting, were acquired with the aid of a grant from the National Heritage Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government, in 1984
