Summary
Oil painting on panel, A Venetian Courtesan at her Dressing Table, British (English) School, circa 1600. A bejewelled and richly attired woman sits, facing, her head turned to our right, three-quarter-length, at her dressing-table, strewn with mirror, pearls, gold chain, and comb, and with a chained unguent-pot on a stand. She holds her pearl necklace away from her neck with her left hand, and raises her rich cloak over her right shoulder with her right. A book on the table.
Provenance
Acquired with Calke Abbey's contents, with the aid of a grant provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government and transferred in lieu of tax on the estate of Charles Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1917 - 1981) to the National Trust with the house that was given by Henry Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1921- 1991), in 1984
