Summary
Oil painting on panel, Fiametta; a Venetian Courtesan, British (English) School, circa 1600, in the style of Federico Zuccaro (Sant’Angelo in Vado c.1541 – Ancona 1609). Portrait of a lady, emblematic of the passage of time. She wears Elizabethan dress with a high white ruff. At her feet is a small dog and on the table beside her a clock. Inscription reads; 'Fiamet a cur sen in venis./He that into myne eyes will take his way, shall borne his winges and for his further pace shall se the death and this is all I gaine.'
Provenance
Acquired with Calke Abbey's contents, with the aid of a grant provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government and transferred in lieu of tax on the estate of Charles Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1917 - 1981) to the National Trust with the house that was given by Henry Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1921- 1991), in 1984
