Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Changing Horses, the Exeter to London Mail; Sir Henry Paton, Bt leading the Horse by William Henry Davis (c.1786 – 1865), signed with a monogram and dated 1821. Showing the changing of horses of the Exeter to London Mail. A man (Sir Henry Paton [?Peyton] Bt) wearing a grey great-coat with top hat, a whip in his hand, leads a skewbald harnessed carriage horse. Two bays and a grey horse stand harnessed to the left and the coach stands behind. To the right are two bays, a dark bay and a grey horse, also harnessed, with two grooms. A goat and two dogs are in the foreground between the inn and a stable block.
Provenance
Acquired with Calke Abbey's contents, with the aid of a grant provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government and transferred in lieu of tax on the estate of Charles Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1917 - 1981) to the National Trust with the house that was given by Henry Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1921- 1991), in 1984
