Summary
Oil painting on canvas, 'Lofty' a Skewbald Carriage Horse with a Greyhound by John E. Ferneley (Thrussington 1782 – Melton Mowbray 1860), inscribed lower right: J. Ferneley/Melton Mowbray/1837. A skewbald carriage horse is shown facing left with full harness, a brown greyhound at its head. The horse has a white tail and black mane, the dog is flecked with white. In the background is a landscape with a reddish sky and to the right is a shed. (Inventory card). Lofty was the last of the race of skewbalds at Calke according to Isabel Harpur Crewe (House Guide, last revised 1996).
Provenance
Acquired with Calke Abbey's contents, with the aid of a grant provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government and transferred in lieu of tax on the estate of Charles Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1917 - 1981) to the National Trust with the house that was given by Henry Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1921- 1991), in 1984
