Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Dark Bay Saddled Hunter by Mounting Steps by Thomas Grimshawe (fl.1844-1851), signed and dated, lower right: 'Thos. Grimshawe 1851/7'. A dark bay hunter stands saddled with mounting steps near its head. It faces left, its head marked with a white blaze. Behind it is an archway. The steps are of brick and stone, with a small opening underneath. (Inventory card). Thomas Grimshawe lived in Derby, little is known about his work. (House Guide, last revised 1996)
Provenance
Acquired with Calke Abbey's contents, with the aid of a grant provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government and transferred in lieu of tax on the estate of Charles Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1917 - 1981) to the National Trust with the house that was given by Henry Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1921- 1991), in 1984
