Oil painting on canvas, 'Mouse' a Grey Pony and a Spaniel in a Landscape by Thomas Weaver (Worthen 1774 - Liverpool 1843), signed lower left: Thos. Weaver, Shrewsbury Pinxit 1824. A grey pony and a spaniel. The pony faces right, standing in a landscape, the brown and white spaniel stands looking up at it. The pony has white flecks on its rump and body. (Inventory card). Thomas Weaver, born in Shropshire, was noted for animal subjects and particularly for his portraits of pedigree cattle and sheep. He painted several of the Calke prize-winning cattle. Isabel Harpur Crewe indicated that this is 'Mouse' a favourite pony of Sir John Harpur Crewe, 8th Bt.
Provenance
Acquired with Calke Abbey's contents, with the aid of a grant provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government and transferred in lieu of tax on the estate of Charles Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1917 - 1981) to the National Trust with the house that was given by Henry Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1921- 1991), in 1984
