Summary
Portrait miniature, oil painting on copper, Charles Gerard, 1st Earl of Macclesfield (c.1618 –1694) by Anglo-Dutch School, c.1650. Bust-length portrait of a young man, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a curly brown wig and white stock. An inscription on the back reads, 'Charles Lord Gerard, Earl of Macclesfield, Baron and Visct. Gerard of Brandon b. early 17th century. Created Baron in 1645. All the title extinct on the death of 2nd son in 1702'. (Inventory card) He was a Royalist commander during the Civil War. (House Guide, last revised 1996)
