Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on porcelain, Anne 'Nanette' Hawkins, Lady Crewe (1765/6-1827), British (English) School, 1790-1795. Oval. A head-and-shoulders portrait of a young woman, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, brown hair, wearing a white dress and straw hat tied with a white kerchief under the chin. Brown eyes, fair hair, paink cheeks and aged about 20 to 25. Sky background. An inscription on the back reads, 'Nanette, Lady Crewe. The wife of Sir Henry Crewe Bart. Calke Abbey, Derbyshire'. (Inventory card) Possible a copy of a miniature by Engleheart or Richard Cosway, perhaps a marriage portrait. It is tempting to think that the original might even be by Sir Thomas Lawrence who had painted her husband and his father about ten years earlier. Derby copyists working on porcelain and enamel at this time, or later, were Richard Askew, James Banford, Henry Bone, William Corden, John Haslem and James Rouse.
Provenance
Acquired with Calke Abbey's contents, with the aid of a grant provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government and transferred in lieu of tax on the estate of Charles Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1917 - 1981) to the National Trust with the house that was given by Henry Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1921- 1991), in 1984
