Summary
Oil painting on slate, The Holy Family with Saint Anne, attributed to a Roman follower of Giorgio Vasari (Arezzo 1511 – Florence 1574), mid 16th century. In the centre of the painting is the kneeling figure of Mary, turned and in three-quarter profile to the left; the Christ Child is climbing onto her lap from the left and moving to place his arms around her neck and his cheek against hers; Saint Anne, the Virgin's mother, and Saint Joseph are behind, on the left and right, respectively.
Provenance
Calke Abbey was given to the National Trust by Henry Harpur Crewe (1921-1991) and the contents, including this painting, were acquired with the aid of a grant from the National Heritage Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government, in 1984
