Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A South-east View of Calke Abbey, Derbyshire, by John Glover (Houghton-on-the-Hill 1767 – Launceston, Tasmania 1849), c. 1821. A south east view of Calke Abbey set within the park with a large group of trees behind the house and trees in the foreground, rabbits and birds on the grass. An associated drawing for the composition can be found in an 1821 sketchbook by John Glover held in the British Museum, London (1905,0113.1.1-44; front paste-down, a small sketch of Calke Abbey, with trees left and right, inscribed above, 'J Glover Septr 1st 1821 Scenes at Calke Abbey the Seat of Sr.George Crave Bart').
Provenance
Calke Abbey was given to the National Trust by Henry Harpur Crewe (1921-1991) and the contents, including this painting, were acquired with the aid of a grant from the National Heritage Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government, in 1984
