Summary
Oil on panel, Lord Henry Paget, later the 7th Marquess of Anglesey (1922-2013), at the age of 14, by Rex Whistler (1905-44), c. 1936. A half-length portrait of the sitter wearing a jacket and tie, in front of a bookcase, leaning on a pile of books, a bookmark extending from one of the books inscribed 'Aetatis suae XIV' ('at the age of 14'), in an early, 18th-century-style gilded frame.
Provenance
Acquired from the artist by the sitter's sister, Lady Caroline Duff (née Paget, 1913-76); bequeathed to her sister Lady Katherine Farrell (née Paget, 1922-2017); acquired by the National Trust at auction at Sotheby's, 12 June 2017 (Modern and Post-War British Art, lot 151) with contributions from the Marquess of Anglesey, Philip Baldwin, Lady Jenni Hopkins, a bequest by Mrs G. Hammer, the Plas Newydd Gift Fund, the Menai, Merionydd and Eryri National Trust Associations and other donors.
