Summary
Silver salver engraved with the arms of John Chute (1701-76), by John Carter II, with the London hallmark of the year 1772 (capital R) on the back. John Chute (1701-1776) of The Vyne acquired an extensive collction of silver, much of it acquired from Frederick Kandler the foremost maker of the period. A suriviving bill amongst the Chute family papers (now at the Hampshire Record Office, Winchester) includes this salver as the largest amongst a suite of six dishes of different sizes. Producing a flat surface on such a scale required high technical skill, so Kandler outsourced the making of this salver to John Carter II (fl.1768-77) who produced this salver of the very highest quality.
Provenance
Purchased by John Chute from Frederick Kandler, as one of a set of six salvers, 1773, and thence by descent. Purchased by the National Trust from Christopher Hartop, 2014.
