Full description
In 1849, Sir John Harpur Crewe, 9th Bt. (1824-86) paid Kitching & Abud £2.8.0 for ‘Setting coin in gold enamelled serpent pin' (Derbyshire Record Office, D2375/E/A/6/2/164). The pin was recorded in the 1886 inventory of the family jewel case within a ‘Long paper box containing 2 pins, one without a centre the other gold Indian? coin set in blue enamel’ (Derbyshire Record Office, D2375/H/F/2/27). The corresponding stick pin is NT 288843.
Provenance
Stick pin with gold coin probably set by Kitching & Abud in June 1849 for Sir John Harpur Crewe, 9th Bt. (1824-86) for £2.8.0 with bill recording 'Setting coin in gold enamelled serpent pin'. Recorded in the 1886 inventory of the family jewel case within a ‘Long paper box containing 2 pins, one without a centre the other gold Indian coin set in blue enamel’. Thence by descent to Henry Harpur-Crewe (1921-91) and transferred with Calke Abbey and its contents to the National Trust by the Treasury in lieu of Capital Transfer Tax in 1985 with an endowment provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
