Summary
Mahogany and brass horse-measuring stick, the sliding horizontal arm with an inlaid brass banner engraved 'Sr. Harry Harpur Bart.' On the other side a similar plate engraved 'I. Daykin/Nottingham fecit'. The stick will fold and is turned at the base. Upper part is squared and has a brass measure attached both sides, with brass pins - some missing, engraved with hands and inches. Plumb lines are incorporated into the measuring arm. A scallop shell is engraved at the top of the brass measure and the stick has a round brass finial.

Mahogany and brass horse-measuring stick, the sliding horizontal arm with an inlaid brass banner engraved 'Sr. Harry Harpur Bart.' On the other side a similar plate engraved 'I. Daykin/Nottingham fecit'. The stick will fold and is turned at the base. Upper part is squared and has a brass measure attached both sides, with brass pins - some missing, engraved with hands and inches. Plumb lines are incorporated into the measuring arm. A scallop shell is engraved at the top of the brass measure and the stick has a round brass finial. Almost certainly made by John Daykin, gunsmith of Nottingham c1760-c1775. Other horse measures made by gunsmiths are known - one by William Newton of Grantham (1722-1790), now at Snowshill Manor, Gloucestershire (1338292), and another by Robert Wogdon, Cockspur Street, Charing Cross, dated 1765 (sold at auction: Clevedon Salerooms 9 Sept. 2010, Lot 607)
