Summary
Print, black and white aquatint, 'Defence of Toulon' (after Archibald Robertson). Drawn and engraved by Archibald Robertson (1745-1813). , published also by him April 18th 1794. The scene is a harbour at night, to the right of the pictuire sailing ships on fire and to the left a fortress with men firing guns. In the centre is huge explosion. Inscription reads, 'To the Rt. Hon. Lord Hood, Vice Admiral to the Red, Sir Sidney Smith Captn. in his majesty's navy, knight commander. Grand cross of the Royal Military Order of the Sword and other British and foreign officers who were employed in the defence of Toulon. This plate representing the conflagration effected there on the night of 18th Dec. 1793 under orders and immediate directions of Sir Sidney Smith, by which the naval power of France received an important and decisive blow, unparalleled in any former war, is respectfully inscribed Archibald Robertson.' A wide margin.
