Summary
Cream vase and cover, cream-coloured earthenware (creamware), urn shaped body with low pedestal foot, two horizontal loop handles, domed cover with central funnel opening, rounded rim, Wedgwood & Co, Etruria, Stoke-on-Trent, 1780-1790; undecorated.
Full description
Home Farm, to the south west of the main house at Calke, was redeveloped as a Dairy House around 1779-81. The walls were once covered with white Wedgwood tiles and it is possible that this cream vase and cover was used in the new dairy. The same shape of cream vase was among the supplies ordered from Wedgwood for the Countess Spencer’s dairy at Althorp in 1786, painted with trailing green ivy to match the tiled walls.
