Caption
This painting of the Thames from Richmond Hill is one of many views of this area of west London painted by George Hilditch in the mid-nineteenth century. In fact, he revisited this exact spot on numerous occasions: a selection of works painted by Hilditch from the same vantage point are today in the Richmond upon Thames Borough Art Collection. Typically, these works depict figures in the foreground, enjoying the expansive rural prospect from the top of the hill.
