Summary
Sepia photograph of seated gentleman in profile. Letter on embossed paper to; Mr Brown, vicar.
Full description
Folded paper embossed centrally AUCKLAND CASTLE BISHOP AUCKLAND Sep 29 1876 My dear Sir Mr Brown, the Vicar of Siltscombe [?] has written to me about giving a letter to Mr Wolstenholme, & has forwarded to me your note respecting him. It is contrary to my usual rule to admit a person of 40 years as candidate for deacon’s orders, & it is, I know, no easy task, to fit such as one, of two years living, to a theological sacrament – Would you kindly tell me, in confidence, whether you think Mr W would be pretty sure to pass my examination, for I should be sorry to expose myself to the chance of having the painful duty thrown upon me of plucking a married man of 40. Yours truly C Dunhelm(?] Written underneath in pencil; Lightfoot.
Provenance
Purchase from the estate of the late Lord Wraxall with the assistance of the NHMF and donations from members and supporters
