Full description
Sepia photograph of HIS EMINENCE CARDINAL MANNING standing robed beside a pillar. Sepia photograph of elderly churchman, robed and seated. Folded single sheet of blue paper written on all four sides in ink. 78. S. Audley St Nov. 22. 1813 My dear friend I shall be most happy to see you as you pass through London - & know of no engagement to hinder me next week. You will believe that I have often thought of you: I have not written for my time has been very full. I am glad that you have read Atkin’s book, though I think the whole to be needless for you. You say rightly that such investigations are impossible to mankind. Did God then ordain that our knowledge of saving Truth should depend upon what is impossible to the mass of mankind? The truth is that all this is beside the question. It is also only a perpetual indulgence of our own mind. The whole question begins & ends in this “Is the Church of God One in number & individual as God is one?” Primacy is a semantic question with which no man has any thing [----] till he has decided this only essential point. I therefore feel that you are wandering and losing yourself. And the seeking without finding, & hungering without being filled is the Divine warning that you are out of the way. God keep you and give you the simplicity and docility of a child - for we can only so enter the Kingdom of God. Believe me, always affect.ly yours [---] Manning At bottom of first page is in different writing – a number (465?) and Cardinal Manning. White paper embossed centrally with coat of arms and on right in ink. Number 80 written in top right hand corner. 8 York Place Portman Square London W Sept 10 1859 My dear Bagshawe I have received Mr Henderson’s Cheque safe. As I hope to see you on Tuesday, I will not write more. Your affect Friend N. Card. Wiseman
