Children’s carriages were sometimes based on larger carriages. The attractive four-wheeled carriage is quite sophisticated and was possibly made as a replicate of a family carriage. It belonged to the Blathwayt family at Dyrham Park, Bath.
Summary
Child's Carriage built circa 1880. Childs carriage (four wheels) for a pair of very small ponies or goats. The body is of a shape similar to a landau and is sprung on elliptic springs. There is a a pole and two candle lamps. Painted in black livery with white lining and detailing.
Full description
This is a child’s carriage loosely based on landau form but with no boot neck and the boot sides extend to form the body sides.
Provenance
Generously transferred to the National Trust by Bristol City Council in 2018. The carriage was previously on loan to the National Carriage Collection from 1994 to 2018. It originates from Dyrham Park.
