Summary
Historic metal railings - date from 1715, these railings are listed. The railings are formed from hand forged wrought iron sections assembled using traditional blacksmithing techniques. There are 68 no paling leaded into the stone copings. They alternate between flat and barley twist bars. Flat palings are formed from ~ 1 ⅛” x ¼” thk wrought iron by 45 ½” long, the twisted palings are 1” x ¼” thk apart from 2 no larger ones that are 1 ½” wide. The palings have centres at ~ 3 ½”. The palings pass through a flat top rail 1 ¾” wide x ¼” thick. The flat palings are set at a 45o angle to the rail with half pointing to the left pier and half the right pier. The palings are pinned to the top rail with small iron wedges and taper to form square finials approx 7 ¼” - 8 ¾” long. At each end of the top rail there is a large decorative iron scroll riveted between the first paling and the stone pier. At the centre of the railing run is an iron barley twist backstay leaded into the stone coping. This splits at the top to form a forked piece that is riveted to the top rail.
