Summary
A mahogany dining room pedestal and ormolu mounted urn, English, circa 1765-1775, one of a pair. The urn fitted with a knopped lid mounted with a pineapple finial above a band of fluting centred by a carved stellar (or sunburst) patera and fitted at either end with an unusual up-carving handle with satyr mask backplate cast in ormolu, on a circular foot. The pedestal topped by an inset platform carved to its edge with fluting and fitted with a metal tap or spigot, above a circular patera, framed by two flame-veneered reserves edged with concave-cornered bead mouldings. The door opening to reveal a tin- or lead-lined interior fitted with two shelves, probably once containing a brazier for warming plates. On a moulded plinth.
